Kakadu

Kakadu is our three-year-old room, and the year imagination takes over. Children build whole worlds, work through problems as a group, and form friendships, with the program planned around what they’re curious about and ready for next.

The first preschool room

A step, rather than a jump.

Three is a wide age. A child who has just turned three and one about to turn five want very different days, and putting both in one room means one of them is always being stretched or held back.

Where Kakadu runs, it takes the younger half, so the routines lengthen, the group work starts, and the room before school stays focused on the children who are going.

Where to next

The best way to understand this room is to stand in it.

What the room is set up for

Four things the Kakadu room is arranged around.

A longer morning

More of the day given to one thing at a time, which is the habit the preschool year is built on.

Working near others

Shared tables and shared materials, so that co-operating is something practised rather than expected all at once.

Following two steps

Instructions that carry more than one part, met at the age where holding both is the achievement.

Doing it unaided

Bags, shoes, hands, lunch boxes: the things a child will be asked to manage alone the following year.

What families ask about Kakadu

The questions that come up on nearly every tour.

  • Is it at my centre?

Kakadu runs at selected centres. Ask the centre you are enquiring about; where it is not offered, Daintree Forest takes children from three instead.

  • Is this the preschool year?

No. The preschool year is the one before school and it runs in Daintree Forest. Kakadu is the year before that.
